The Book of John: Chapter 8
WorkPlace Influence
Introduction
Scholars agree that the story that opens this chapter (vv. 1-11) records an actual incident in the life of Christ. There is debate regarding its setting in Jerusalem at this time, six months before the crucifixion. It does, however, serve as a fitting introduction to the following verses where Jesus continues to offer Himself and His Word as God’s answer to the sin problem. Then and now, Jesus’ offer is ridiculed by those who deny that there is sin in their lives.
Pray for focus and insight, then read aloud chapter 8 of John.
Focus Question
What do verses 1-11 reveal about what Jesus thinks about sin? How is that different from commonly-held, secular ideas about sin? From what did Christ set this woman free? Could her accusers also be set free? Why?
Additional Discussion Questions
You may not have time to follow all the suggestions below entirely. Just begin at the beginning and enjoy the benefits of all that you have time to complete.
1. Jesus said (v.12) that those who follow Him can now choose not to sin. In vv.31-36 He calls the opportunity to make that choice, “freedom”. Why is it appropriate to call sin, bondage? What is the action on our part,(vv.12 and 31-32) that makes freedom possible? How is freedom related to truth (v.32)?
2. Identify the enemy in our battle for freedom from sin in v. 44. What are his tactics? Give examples of lies about how we should think or how we ought to live that the devil, with destructive intent, tries to put into our minds. What actions will equip us with truth to counter his lies and be set free from sin?
3. Jesus continues to confront those who refuse to face their sin and be set free, in spite of the way they treat Him (vv. 13,37,48). What does He know (vv. 19, 47) and why does He care (vv. 21-24, 50-51)? What do we learn from this about the way He will deal with our sin and the attitudes we should have about sin in our own lives and in the lives of others?
Response
1. Pray that you may experience the freedom discussed in this chapter.
